Highlights
  • Beshbarmaq - Just over an hour’s drive north-west of Baku along the Guba highway is a 382-metre high mountain whose bizarre shape long ago led to it being called Mt. Beshbarmag, which is Azerbaijani for ‘Five-finger Mountain’. Legend has it that sometime in the ancient past a prophet called Khidr ventured here in search of a ‘potion of life’ and having drunk from a spring at the summit achieved immortality. Today the mountain is shrouded in mystery with locals coming here to pray for strength and good fortune. As a tourist attraction, it’s well worth climbing to witness a number of age-old spiritual rituals as well as for the fantastic views of the Caspian Sea from the summit. What’s more, the general area is also one of Azerbaijan’s best birdwatching sites, with the corridor between the mountains and the sea acting as a bottleneck for hundreds of migrating bird species.

Additional Information

Traveling merely a little over 60 minutes by car to the north-west of Baku, following the path of the Guba highway, lies a peculiarly shaped mountain standing at 382 meters tall, affectionately known locally as Mt. Beshbarmag, a name that translates from Azerbaijani as
‘Five-finger Mountain.’ According to folklore, an ancient prophet by the name of Khidr once made a pilgrimage to this place in the quest for an elusive ‘elixir of life,’ and, upon imbibing the waters from a spring located at its peak, was bestowed with the gift of eternal life. Nowadays, enigmatic tales blanket the mountain, drawing residents to its heights to seek empowerment and prosperity through prayer. For visitors, ascending this natural wonder offers not only a chance to observe various ancestral ceremonial practices but also provides a breathtaking vista of the Caspian Sea from its highest point. Moreover, the surrounding region ranks as one of Azerbaijan’s premier locales for ornithologists, with the strip of land caught between the mountain range and the sea serving as a migratory strait for countless avian species.
