A Warm Welcome to Skagway
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that offer both adventure and learning opportunities for my kids. When I heard about the Skagway City & Summit Tour in Alaska, I knew it was a must-do for our family. The idea of exploring the historic town of Skagway, with its gold-rush-era charm, was too enticing to pass up.
Our journey began with a warm welcome from our friendly driver at the hotel. The kids were thrilled to hop into the comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, and we set off on a scenic 30-minute drive through the breathtaking landscapes of Skagway. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the heart of the city, ready to embark on our adventure.
Discovering Skagway’s Rich History
Upon arrival, we were greeted by our seasoned tour guide, whose passion for Skagway’s history was infectious. We started our tour at the iconic Welcome to Alaska Sign, a perfect photo opportunity that the kids loved. The sign, located at the Canadian border, was a reminder of the vastness and beauty of this incredible state.
As we ventured into Skagway’s downtown, we were transported back in time to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. The preserved gold-rush-era buildings were fascinating, and our guide shared captivating stories of the adventurers who once roamed these streets. The kids were particularly intrigued by the tales of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, imagining the vintage locomotives chugging past the steep Chilkoot trail.
Free Time and Family Fun
After the guided tour, we had two hours of free time to explore Skagway at our own pace. This was a perfect opportunity for some family bonding as we strolled through the charming streets, stopping at local shops and enjoying some delicious Alaskan treats.
The kids were eager to try their hand at panning for gold, a fun and educational activity that gave them a taste of the gold rush experience. We also took a leisurely walk along the waterfront, soaking in the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
As our day in Skagway came to an end, we were whisked back to our hotel in the comfort of our private vehicle, our hearts full of cherished memories. The Skagway City & Summit Tour was a perfect blend of history, adventure, and family fun, and I can’t wait to share more of our Alaskan adventures with you all!
