Highlights
  • Prambanan Temples - Begin your day by convening with your English-speaking guide in the lobby of your central Yogyakarta hotel. A personal driver will escort you on a 45-minute drive eastward to the Prambanan, an 8th-century Hindu temple complex, also known as Lorojongrang locally. The 20-kilometer journey offers a glimpse into the daily life of Java, which is of great cultural significance. Recognized as the largest Hindu temple in the world and under UNESCO’s guardianship since 1991, the Prambanan complex is believed to encompass over 200 individual temple edifices, with many still standing today. Since its reemergence, the site continues to be a focal point for Hindu celebrations and ceremonies among Indonesians.
  • Jalan Candi Plaosan Lor - Upon reaching the site, your guide will lead you through the remarkable engravings that have endured over centuries. The intricate stonework narrates the epic of the Ramayana, rich in allegory. As you traverse the hallowed site, which boasts over 240 documented temples and structures (the tallest reaching 47 meters high), your guide will provide detailed insights into the ties between Prambanan and its adjacent temples, rooted in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. You’ll have ample opportunity to meander, taking in the stunning sculptures and nearby sanctuaries like Candi Plaosan and Candi Sewu.

Once you’ve captured your final photographs, you’ll return to your climate-controlled vehicle for a relaxed journey back to Yogyakarta. You’re expected to reach your hotel shortly after noon, traffic permitting.

A bit tiring, but worthwhile - Fascinating temple complex - worth more time than we could give it. We followed it up with a nearby performance of the epic Ramayana, which was excellent.
