Nestled in the Alsace plain at the base of the Vosges mountains, the town is traversed by the Ill River, and its region is predominantly occupied by the marshlands of the Grand Ried.
Sélestat is first recorded in the 8th century. As a free city within the Holy Roman Empire and a member of the Decapolis, Sélestat flourished remarkably in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, becoming a hub of humanist thought. It was then Alsace’s third-largest city, boasting a port on the Ill and a fortified wall. However, it faced turmoil due to the Reformation, the Peasants’ War, and the Thirty Years’ War, after which it came under French control.
- Chateau du Haut Koenigsbourg - The Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, occasionally referred to as Haut-Koenigsbourg, is a medieval fortress situated in the municipality of Orschwiller in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, France.
- Bergheim - Situated in the canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, Bergheim lies 17 km to the north of Colmar and 10 km to the southwest of Sélestat. It is positioned on the undulating border of the Alsace plain, flanked by Ribeauvillé, Saint-Hippolyte, and Thannenkirch, and is a mere two kilometers from the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains, which are known for their abrupt rise.
