Sofia serves as the modern capital of Bulgaria. Its populace saw major growth during the Communist-Socialist period (1944-1989). At the point of its emancipation from the Turks in 1878, the city accommodated only 11,649 residents. Post liberation, for several decades, the urban space witnessed a surge in population, mostly from other parts of the country. Towards the end of 1943 and early 1944, allied forces bombarded Sofia during World War 2, leading to a takeover by the Soviet Red Army, overthrowing Bulgaria’s then Germany-aligned government. The evolution of Bulgaria into a People’s Republic in 1946 and later, Republic of Bulgaria, led to noteworthy alterations in the city’s landscape.
