Prohodna is a cave corridor, a magnificent rock bridge oriented from east to west. It was formed at the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 66-68 million years ago. Historically, the Iskar River filled the cave, but now the river flows below the cave’s level. Due to active karst processes, seismic activity, and river dynamics characteristic of that era, the cave’s karst corridor was interrupted, leaving this section isolated.
The Zlatna Panega River originates from Bulgaria’s largest karst spring, “Glava Panega” (4000 l/s), at an altitude of 188 meters above sea level. It flows northward, creating a scenic gorge before reaching the town of Lukovit.
