-
Pompeii Archaeological Park - The ruins of Pompeii form a vast archaeological site in the southern Campania region, near the Gulf of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under layers of ash and pumice following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The preserved site features excavated streets and houses that visitors can freely explore.
-
Forum - The Civic Forum was the hub of daily life in the city, surrounded by all the main public buildings for city administration and justice, business management, commercial activities like markets, and the main places of worship.
-
Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus - The Temple of Jupiter dominates the northern side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius rising dramatically behind it. With the establishment of the colony (80 BC), the temple underwent a radical renovation, becoming a true Capitolium, featuring three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, modeled after those of the Capitolium in Rome, placed on a high base to be visible to those passing through the Forum square.
-
Macellum - The Macellum consists of a tuff quadriporticus, with a cult room elevated on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. The Macellum of Pompeii was essentially the city market where people could purchase foodstuffs. Located northeast of the Forum, the complex was set back from the square to avoid overcrowding, given the high number of visitors. The portico walls were adorned with scenes of daily life, such as fish and poultry sales, as well as mythological subjects.
-
Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza is one of the main streets of ancient Pompeii, in Campania, connecting the Forum with the Amphitheater.
-
Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - The Stabian Baths were built in several phases. The initial construction phase dates back to the 4th century BC (the trapezoidal base gymnasium). The main entrance on Via dell’Abbondanza leads to a large courtyard. To the left is the swimming pool, while to the right, a portico provides access to the male section, consisting of an apodyterium (changing room), with an adjacent frigidarium (for cold baths), leading to the tepidarium (for warm baths) and then the calidarium (for hot baths). The female section, adjacent to the male one, was similarly arranged with an apodyterium, tepidarium, and calidarium, but was smaller and lacked the rich decorations of the male section. Women entered through a separate door.
-
Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii, with its erotic paintings, is one of the most famous buildings of the excavations and served as a brothel. In the Lupanar, prostitutes, mostly Greek and Eastern slaves, practiced their trade. The building is two stories high: the upper floor housed the owner and the slaves, while the lower floor had five rooms, each equipped with a masonry bed. The Lupanar derives its name from “lupa,” the Latin term for prostitute.
-
Teatro Grande - The Teatro Grande was built around the mid-2nd century BC and underwent significant restoration in the Roman style. The theater hosted comedies and tragedies of Greco-Roman tradition. It was the first large public building to be completely freed from the eruption deposits.
-
Sorrentino Vini - Sorrentino Vini was founded in 1990 by Paolo Sorrentino’s passion. The company is currently the largest on Vesuvius, with 35 hectares of property, all located within the Vesuvius National Park. The most famous wine produced on Vesuvius is Lacryma Christi. It is the only DOC (controlled designation of origin) produced on Vesuvius.
-
Herculaneum Archaeological Park - The ruins of Herculaneum are an archaeological site in the southern Campania region, near the Gulf of Naples. Once a small and sophisticated Roman city, Herculaneum was buried under layers of ash and pumice following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The site is still perfectly preserved today, featuring excavated streets, houses, and villas that visitors can admire.
-
House of the Deer - This luxurious house with a sea-view terrace belonged to Q. Granius Verus, a freed slave shortly before Herculaneum’s destruction. In the garden, there are two statues of deer attacked by a pack of dogs, from which the house takes its name.
-
House of Neptune and Amphitrite - Truly enchanting are the glass paste mosaics (very expensive for the time), with floral and hunting scenes, and centrally positioned is the mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite (the sea deity and his companion).
-
House of the Skeleton - The House of the Skeleton is likely the result of the aggregation of three smaller buildings, and its name derives from the discovery of human remains in a room on the second floor, found in 1831.
-
Sacellum of Augustali - The Sacellum of the Augustali in Herculaneum was built near the forum when Emperor Augustus was still alive and in power. It is a quadrangular building that preserves splendid frescoes depicting Hercules entering Olympus accompanied by Jupiter, Juno, Minerva, and Hercules against Achelous. The skeleton of the caretaker was found in his small room lying on the bed.
-
House of the Hotel - The House of the Hotel is a Roman-era house, buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 and discovered following the archaeological excavations of ancient Herculaneum. The House of the Hotel is located on the edge of the hill, in a panoramic position, with its two thousand two hundred and fifty square meters, it is the largest dwelling in Herculaneum discovered so far and is also the only one in the city to have a thermal quarter: for these reasons, it was initially thought to be a hotel.
-
House of the Black Hall - The House of the Black Hall owes its name to its party hall entirely painted in black with geometric motifs. In this house, wax tablets of L. Venidius Ennychus were found, who is believed to have been the owner of the house. The tablets speak of his eligibility as an Augustale, the purchase of a slave, and the birth of a daughter.
