The Pinotage grape is unique to South Africa, having been hybridized in the country, but it’s not the only wine you’ll taste. Other varietals are grown in South Africa, too, including Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay.

We visit three wineries in Stellenbosch (Paupl or Franschhoek), with tastings including history and culture. The valleys of Stellenbosch have been growing grapes since the 1600s, making them the nation’s largest wine-producing region. A vibrant crimson, ochre, or brown color appears on Franschhoek, Paarl, Pniel, Stellenbosch, Klapmuts, Wellington, and Tulbagh grapevines in the fall.
