Additional Information

This is a tour that has never been offered until now. Guided tours along the Hurricane Canal, to date, have only been a once-a-year offering. Participants on this tour see things most tourists pass over. People of all ages enjoy encountering the canal and its tunnels and flumes, which makes it not a typical hike. This tour is enlightening look at what it took to settle the land in the American West. These hardy settlers had to build irrigation systems in order to establish their communities and the Hurricane Canal was one of the toughest ones to build. It took 12 years to build and was mostly a pick-and-shovel operation with no public financing. It is an engineering marvel of its time and truly a miracle because as one looks at some sections of the canal, they seem to run uphill.

Come explore the Hurricane canal! - I loved this tour! Reuben is a very knowledgable guide and his stories bring the whole experience to life. While walking this trail, you can picture the early settlers who worked without modern tools and equipment to make the settling of the town of Hurricane possible. Without water, the early town of Hurricane could not have survived. I would recommend this tour to tourists and to residents of Hurricane, St. George, Ivins, and the surrounding area. It is a magical piece of history. I have so much respect for the builders of the canal and the canal riders who kept the water flowing day in and day out for decades. The views are breathtaking, the history fascinating and the guide interesting, entertaining and friendly.
