Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct - No other site of incarceration in South Africa has held as many world-renowned figures as Constitution Hill’s Old Fort, Women’s Jail, and Number Four. Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and Fatima Meer all served time here. The precinct also confined tens of thousands of ordinary people over its 100-year history, including men and women of all races, creeds, ages, and political beliefs, as well as children. The history of every South African is reflected here. Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. The site, a former prison and military fort, bears witness to South Africa’s turbulent past and is now home to the Constitutional Court, which upholds the rights of all citizens.
