Peristyle serves as the central square of the Palace, designed for Emperor Diocletian, who was revered as the living son of Jupiter, and is surrounded by numerous temples. The Emperor would make his appearance under the architrave of the central section of Protyron, where his subjects would approach him, kneeling to kiss the hem of his scarlet cloak, or prostrating themselves entirely on the ground before him. A 3,500-year-old, perfectly preserved sphinx, a testament to Split’s historical journey, vigilantly guards the Peristyle.
