Highlights
  • Trg Franje Tuđmana - We will meet at the bus station on Trg (Square) Franje Tuđmana, where you’ll be briefed on the Communist tour of Split. Here, you’ll also learn about significant events during World War II in Split and Yugoslavia that led to the formation of the new communist state. You’ll be shown photos of the wartime damage in Split.
  • Poljud Stadium - We’ll make a brief panoramic stop to discuss the most beautiful stadium built during the communist era in Yugoslavia, which was also well-known internationally. Poljud Stadium, one of Split’s symbols, was constructed to host the Mediterranean Games, the largest sporting event in Yugoslavia at the time. It was a highlight of the Yugoslav architecture exhibition at MoMA in New York, underscoring its significance. At the same location, we’ll also focus on the widest building in Split, known as the “China Wall,” another example of Yugoslav socialist architecture.
  • Prodajni centar Koteks - As you walk around Yugoslavia’s “first shopping mall,” you’ll learn about the “modern” shopping concept in the communist state. You’ll discover its brief popularity and subsequent decline over the years. This stop will also introduce you to Yugoslav consumer life, which balanced between the “open west” and the “closed east,” often requiring people to be creative in obtaining various goods.
  • Krstarica - Split 3 is a modern communist Yugoslav neighborhood designed to provide quality “living, working, and resting” spaces for its residents. It was a unique, high-quality project during the communist era, recognized globally as an example of well-planned modern neighborhoods. As we explore the different architectural styles by local architects, including the “Cruiser” building, you’ll learn about housing policy, the educational system, healthcare, the economy, social life, and politics, with a focus on the dictatorship of Yugoslav communist leader Tito, particularly through examples from the Split area. The Split 3 project was also a highlight of the Yugoslav architecture exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, recognized as one of Yugoslavia’s most important residential projects.

You’ll also have some free time at this location.

  • Split Predgrađe - At our final stop, Kopilica railway station, you’ll hear about the reasons behind Yugoslavia’s collapse and the violent, bloody war of the 1990s. As you listen, you’ll view an armored train on display, symbolizing the beginning of Yugoslavia’s bloody end, which had significant consequences and altered the relationships between nations and religions in Southeast Europe.

Hidden gem tour in Split! Highly recommended!! - If you want something completely different in Split you should take this tour. Before this one we already did the walking tour with Boris and how delighted we were, we decided to go for this one as well. Communist tour of Split gives you completely different view on the history of Split because most of the tours are focused on Roman and Medieval history of the area and this is the only one which offers you to see and understand the period of the history which is not so "in focus" but has every reason not to be like that. The tour focus is on period of Communism/Socialism between two wars, World War II and conflicts in the Balkan in the 1990s even though you will hear what was happening in this area during that time as well. Politics, life, architecture and other themes you probably won`t be able to understand without someone to tell/show you about it. Boris is definitely great choice! Historian, history teacher, tour guide with extensive knowledge for the themes which are part of this tour, will take you through the important parts and the hidden gems as well. Also, there are some small "touches" like having a popular drink from that period and taking a picture at the wheel of one of the symbols of Communist/Socialist Yugoslavia, which is a great add to the tour. After city walking tour, once again, very high recommendation for this tour as well. This is something you won`t be able to get anywhere else in Split. One more time, thank you very much Boris! :) Doreen & Mike

Fascinating and must do it!!! Highest recommendation!!! - When we came to Split we didn't expect significant twentieth century history related to communism so we were very curious when were booking this tour! But it was a bingo! This part of the history of Split is hidden and not so much in the focus which is making it even more interesting! Boris this time showed us interesting architecture of socialist period which was followed with fascinating facts and stories about it! History of Yugoslavia is interesting and unique because it is presenting life and politics between two worlds in that time, western and eastern! Fascinating is a right word for it and Boris is right person to show you that! Must do it!!!

Different tour - different and great experience!!! - This was our second tour with Boris, after we already did the walking tour with him in old city. As we expected this was also a great tour on which we found out a lot about communist period of Split as well as about Croatia and Yugoslavia in general. Boris gave us great insight into this interesting and not so known period of history of this area. History, architecture, everyday life, politics, dictatorship of Tito and many other topics were part of this tour so we really learned a lot, especially because we had a guide who is also a professional historian! We also tasted popular drink of the communist era which was a nice addition to the tour! If you want to see and hear about some other part of Split history and about life in general in communist Yugoslavia I would definitely recommend this tour! All together we were on two tours with Boris and we felt lucky that we had him as our guide! Great experience!! Thank you so much Boris!!!

Communist Yugoslavia as it was - unforgetable experience! - As we were already on another tour with Boris on which we were explained mostly Roman and Medieval part of the history of Split we wanted to know a bit more so we decided to go with him on his Communist tour. Boris showed us that there is much more than just a Roman Emperor's palace, medieval noble palaces and squares in the city. The communist (socialist) heritage is quite impressive as well. We started in the center of the city where we were introduced with "legacy" of the WW2 in Split. After that we visited few locations in Split by car on which we were explained about unique Yugoslavia history, politics, arhitecture and way of life together with other interesting themes such are health and education system. It was "smoothly cruise" between parts of Yugoslavia heritage with interesting stops such as at first Yugoslavia mall or modern communist neighboorhood. During the tours we also had a chance to try popular sada drink of that period which was nice "touch". On the end of the tour Boris explained us the fall of Yugoslavia and gave us some interesting facts about the war. This tour was like a search for treasure of modern history! And Boris was definitely the best person who guided us in that search! After this two tours with Boris I can say that we coudn't spent our time in Split better than this. We enjoyed, we lau we learned and we left fulfilled with unforgetable memories. Thank you Boris

New and original. Must see! - I never had the chance till now to go to a tour like this. I Highly recomend it! Didn't know Split had such a rich communist history. The local architecture from that time was very intesting and somewhat unique in its own way. Very refreshing if people want to get to know the bit more modern history which had a lot to offer in the sense of architecture as an art, which tells its own story about how the architects percived the times of communism through it's buildings.
