Spanning 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq mi), the park was officially established on June 30, 1972.[1]

Prior to becoming a national park, the land was utilized for shifting cultivation, known as chena farming. Following the park’s designation, farmers were gradually relocated. Situated 165 kilometers (103 mi) from Colombo, Udawalawe serves as a crucial habitat for water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. It is a favored tourist attraction and ranks as the third-most visited park in the nation.
