Founded in the 1620s, it quickly became the commercial hub of St. Kitts and one of the region’s busiest anchorages.
• Southeast Peninsula - The peninsula boasts features such as the Great Salt Pond, the largest lake in the country, St. Anthony’s Peak, Turtle Beach, and several bays including Ballast Bay, Major’s Bay, and Cockleshell Bay. Previously, this low-lying, scrubby peninsula was less developed and mainly accessible by boat. However, the construction of an all-weather road in the 1990s has spurred development, especially around Turtle Beach.

This two-part hike, named in honor of James Stephen, a British abolitionist who campaigned against the slave trade, begins at the base of Olivees Mountain and ventures into the lush rainforest. Ascend 1,339 feet along the marked trail, passing a cave, until you arrive at two stunning waterfalls. At this point, you can either return or embark on a more challenging hike that includes scrambling, rope climbing, and rock hopping to reach the second waterfall. Regardless of your choice, you will return to base camp within five hours.
