Island Adventures: Snorkeling and Sightseeing in Gozo and Comino
When the call of the ocean beckons, I can’t resist. This time, it led me to the enchanting islands of Gozo and Comino for a day of snorkeling, swimming, and sightseeing. Join me as I dive into the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon and explore the vibrant culture of Gozo.
Setting Sail from St. Paul’s Bay
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the meeting point in Bugibba, a charming coastal town in Malta. The air was filled with the salty scent of the sea, and I could feel the excitement bubbling within me. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and today, I was about to embark on a new adventure: exploring the islands of Gozo and Comino on a Blue Lagoon Tour.
The boat, operated by Hornblower Cruises, was a welcoming sight. With two decks, it offered the perfect balance of sunbathing and shaded relaxation. I opted for the top deck, eager to soak up the sun and feel the wind in my hair. As we set sail, the captain’s voice echoed through the speakers, providing insights in both English and Italian about the sights we were about to see. The journey along the north coast of Malta was nothing short of spectacular, with rugged cliffs and hidden caves waiting to be discovered.
Diving into the Blue Lagoon
After an hour of cruising, we arrived at the famous Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. The water was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, inviting us to dive in and explore its depths. I grabbed my snorkel gear and slid down the boat’s slide, plunging into the cool, refreshing water. Swimming among the vibrant marine life was an experience I won’t soon forget. The fish darted around me, their scales glinting in the sunlight, creating a kaleidoscope of colors.
The boat’s facilities made it easy to transition between the water and the deck. With a sunbathing area, shaded seating, and a cafeteria offering everything from snacks to cocktails, it was the perfect base for our aquatic adventures. I couldn’t resist trying the Piña Colada, served in a hollowed-out pineapple, which seemed to be a hit among fellow travelers.
Exploring the Island of Gozo
Our next stop was the island of Gozo, where we had the option to join a mini-bus tour for a small fee. I decided to take the tour, eager to explore the island’s rich history and vibrant culture. As we arrived in the capital city of Victoria, the streets were alive with the festivities of St. George’s feast. The energy was infectious, with music, laughter, and the aroma of local delicacies filling the air.
I wandered through the bustling streets, taking in the sights and sounds, before making my way to the Citadel. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the island’s rolling hills and azure coastline. Our tour concluded with a visit to Xlendi Bay, a picturesque fjord-like bay that provided the perfect backdrop for some memorable photos.
As the day came to an end, we boarded the boat once more, our hearts full of adventure and our minds brimming with memories. The journey back to Bugibba was a time for reflection, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. This trip was a reminder of the beauty and wonder that the ocean holds, and I left with a renewed sense of appreciation for the island life I hold so dear.
