• Ryogoku - Meet at JR Ryogoku Station, the tour’s starting point.

• Hyapponkuiato - Begin at the location where the story unfolds. This is the setting of “Okawabata Koshinzuka no Toka” in “San-nin Kichizan Kuro Hatsu Kai” (The First Purchase by Three Kichizan Brokers).

• The Site of Kawatake Mokuami Residence Monument - From Nakamise-dori to Senso-ji Temple. The ruins of Kawatake Mokuami’s residence, the author of “San-nin Kichisan Kuro Hatsu Kai.” Located along the Asakusa Nakamise shopping street, which extends from Kaminarimon, the main gate of Sensoji Temple, to the main hall.

• Kawatake Mokuami Monument - The Kawatake Mokuami Memorial Monument at Asakusa Shrine was erected by Taito City in 1968, 100 years after Edo became Tokyo, to honor Mokuami, who lived in this area.

• Yoshiwara Shrine - Yoshiwara Shrine was established by combining shrines that existed in Yoshiwara since the Edo period. The play “Sannin Kichisan Kuro Hatsu Kai” also features a love story between Bunri (Bunzo Kiya), a sword dealer, and Ichie, a prostitute.

• Enjo-ji Temple - The story is based on “Yaoka Oshichi,” a girl who fell in love with Kichisaburo, a temple peasant, at a temple where she took refuge after a big fire, and was executed for arson when she tried to meet him again. She is famous for Ihara Saikaku’s “Koshoku Gonin Onna” (Five Women of Color). A memorial tomb for Oshichi is located at Enjo-ji Temple.

• Toshima - Ikebukuro, home to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, is one of Tokyo’s busiest and most popular entertainment districts, centered around Ikebukuro Station in Toshima Ward, Tokyo. Ikebukuro is a sub-center of Tokyo and the central area for transportation, commerce, and administration in Toshima Ward. Meals will be at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space or a restaurant in Ikebukuro. Lunch expenses (only guidance to lunch venues will be provided).

• Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre - The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, where the play will be seen, opened in October 1990 as an arts and cultural facility by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to promote arts and culture such as music, drama, revue, and dance for the people of Tokyo and their international exchange. It features a concert hall dedicated to classical music, a playhouse for theater and dance performances, and Theater East and Theater West.

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Presents Kinoshita-Kabuki “Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai” Shuttle Tour (includes ticket to performance) On this tour, participants take a wagon taxi around the famous Tokyo sites providing the setting for “Sannin Kichisa” and the temples linked to the play before watching the show at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. Seeing the play after experiencing the historical context of the work and the cultural background of the Edo period will likely leave a deeper impression. English-speaking guides will take you on a tour of the ruins of the residence of Mokuami Kawatake, the author of the Kabuki play, monuments in his honor, and places related to Oshichi Yaoya, who appears in the play.

• Preschool children are not allowed to attend the performance. They can participate in the shuttle tour, but we ask that you use the childcare services at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre when attending the performance.
