• Wat Mahathat - Constructed in 1374, Wat Mahathat, or “the temple of the Great Relic,” was a pivotal temple in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It housed Buddha relics and served as the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism, making it the epicenter of Buddhism in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. This Royal monastery, located near the palace, was where the King conducted significant ceremonies. When the Burmese invaded and largely destroyed Ayutthaya in 1767, Wat Mahathat was set ablaze.

One of Thailand’s most photographed objects, the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree, can be found at Wat Mahathat.

• Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon - Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, or the “Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory,” is distinguished by its towering prang (tower). Built in the latter half of the 14th century during King U Thong’s reign, it remains an active monastery with resident monks. The monastery acquired its current name in the late 16th century when a large chedi was constructed. In the northeast, a large Reclining Buddha statue, draped in yellow cloth and facing east towards the rising sun, can be seen. Like many other structures in the area, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon was destroyed during the 1767 invasion. It is a remarkable site worth visiting.
• Wat Chaiwatthanaram - Wat Chaiwatthanaram is one of Ayutthaya’s most iconic and well-preserved temples, renowned for its impressive Khmer-style architecture and picturesque riverside location. It is a popular spot for late afternoon and sunset visits. Many locals, dressed in traditional attire, pray in the evening, adding to the site’s charm. Watch for bats emerging from the buildings at sunset. Although one of the stupas is currently under restoration, it does not obstruct the sunset view.
• Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Lokayasutharam) - Wat Lokaya Sutha, or Wat Lokayasutharam, known as “the temple of the Earth,” is famous for its 42-meter-long and 8-meter-high Reclining Buddha image (“Phra Buddha Sai Yat”), typically draped in orange cloth.

Little is known about this monastery’s history. Its proximity to the Royal Palace suggests it was an important temple. The founding date is unknown, but the main prang’s style, similar to Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Mahathat, indicates it likely dates back to the early Ayutthaya period.
