- Denbies Wine Estate Ltd - Arriving at this stunning 265-acre Denbies Wine Estate nestled in a valley surrounded by verdant hills, you can choose an Indoor Wine Tour with a wine tasting experience that begins with a short film in Denbies Cinema. You will learn about the geology and history of the estate and gain fascinating insights into the workings of the vineyard and English wine production while enjoying a glass of Denbies Sparkling Wine. Afterwards, we proceed to visit the winery where you learn about the wine-making process, finishing in the cellar for a wine tasting of true English wine with one of Denbies’ wine experts.
In spring, you also have the option to embark on an outdoor Train Tour which lasts about 50 minutes. This tour involves a trip by a small train to the top of the vineyard for some spectacular views. In the distance, you can see the famous Box Hill.
Afterwards, visit the vineyard shop, buy some delicious wine to take home, or try a cafe at the Chimney Coffee Roastery next door.
- Shere - After a scenic 20-minute drive through tree-hugging, winding country lanes, we will arrive in Shere, a medieval village surrounded by stunning scenery, steeped in rich history and unparalleled charm. Shere embodies the quintessential English village, featuring 16th-century Tudor cottages and Victorian townhouses that seem frozen in time. Nestled in the Tillingbourne valley, this picturesque village has served as a backdrop for renowned films like the romantic comedy “The Holiday” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.
Strolling through the village at your own pace, you will learn about and appreciate the local architecture and history, meander into local shops and coffee houses for a refreshment, visit the famous White Horse pub for a taste of local cider, and explore the 12th-century church with its huge and heavy oak door.
You can even take your shoes off and refresh in the crystal-clear chalk river stream that is also very popular with the ducks, which is quite romantic.
- Gomshall - We will stop for lunch at the award-winning Gomshall Mill Pub, a delightful 17th-century riverside place in the quintessential historical village of Gomshall.
This pub holds Grade 2 listed status (deserves special protection) featuring authentic beams and wooden floors and lots of charm.
Dating back to the 11th century, the site of the mill was documented in the Domesday book! This mill was operational until 1952 for flour and corn milling, and you can observe the flowing river that used to power the mill beneath the pub through a glass window.
Indulge in a choice of delicious dishes crafted from locally sourced produce. You can try traditional fish and chips or a pie of the day. During the winter, cozy up by the fire, and in the summer, bask in the beauty of the garden.
For antique lovers, there is a wonderful antique shop nearby that you are welcome to visit.
- Silent Pool Distillery & The Pool Bar - We will stop at the legendary and mystical Silent Pool, a spring-fed lake nestled at the base of the North Down. Renowned for its mesmerizing emerald green colors creating a magical atmosphere that is truly worth the visit.
Our tour will continue to the Albury Vineyard, a charming family-run biodynamic award-winning vineyard known for producing the highest quality organic wines. Notably, their inaugural vintage was served on the royal barge during the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
On the other side of the Silent Pool Lake is the famous Silent Pool Gin Distillery producing handcrafted, artisan spirits with uncompromising quality. A place where you can taste a gin of rare taste and beauty using over 20 botanicals in the distillation process, earning its enviable reputation across the world and winning an abundance of prestigious industry awards.
On our way down to the car park, you can taste some freshly homemade samosas or Lassi from the Indian-run shop and restaurant.
- Newlands Corner - Newlands Corner is a popular beauty spot. Here you can take in some serious inspiration while admiring the breathtaking views across the Surrey Hills. The hills are part of a chalk ridge spanning all the way to the White Cliffs of Dover in Kent. An ideal location to unwind, relax, and refresh. You can have a little walk or buy a hot drink with a cake at the cute family-run coffee shop - the Plucky Pheasant - while reflecting on the time spent together before we slowly return back to our meeting point. Let’s hope all good thoughts and amazing memories!
Agatha Christie, the famous English crime novelist and playwright, staged her disappearance from Newlands Corner in 1926 which caused a public outcry; the whole country was looking for her. She was found 11 days later at the Old Swan Spa in Harrogate where she checked in under her husband’s mistress’s name. I am sure there was some “stress” involved.
