A favourite spot for a day trip from Seoul, the expansive city of Suwon is the biggest in the province of Gyeonggi-do, with World Heritage-designated walls encircling its center. In the 18th century, Suwon was almost declared the national capital when King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty constructed the 5.7km fortifications between 1794 and 1796 in preparation for relocating the royal court to the south. However, following the king’s death, power stayed in Seoul, leaving Suwon with an impressive tourist attraction. The city sits approximately 30km south of Seoul.
