Highlights
  • Breiðamerkurjökull - On the Ice Exploration tour, you’ll spend about 2 hours (4-6 km) hiking on Breiðamerkurjökull, a glacier outlet of Vatnajökull. Your guide will explain how glaciers form and change, affecting their surroundings. You’ll see various natural attractions, including mountains, ashy ice, and possibly blue ice. The tour activities vary based on daily conditions and group preferences, with options to explore larger glacier areas or enter moulins and crevasses. Rated medium in difficulty, the tour requires participants to walk 4-6 km on diverse terrain and in varying weather conditions. No prior glacier experience is needed.

We provide crampons, helmets, and safety harnesses. Guides will ensure you’re prepared before starting. Dress according to the weather; the glacier is usually as cold as the Glacier Lagoon meeting point. Wear warm, breathable clothing and sturdy shoes. Meeting times are 08:30, 12:00, or 13:45.

Excellent tour - Can’t fault this. Sunny weather, absolute beast of a 4WD so barely felt the off road bumps. Actual tour is great. About 2h 15 walking on the glacier with crampons. Alex is a really good guide. We were lucky with the weather and a blue ice cave stop. Teens thoroughly enjoyed it too

Fantaspectacular hiking over glaciers - It was the best glacier hiking I have ever taken in the 13th trip of mine to Iceland. I am delighted to have Iga, our guide, to get to the best view of glacier lagoon and to the fantastic ice cave under glaciers. I find she is certainly part of Iceland, the land of fire and Ice. My family of 4 enjoyed this wonderful trip so much that I do not have an iota of reservation to recommend Ice Explorer to whomever comes to Iceland! Tons of thanks to Iga for her love for glaciers and people of all walks of life. Asaph, Patricia, and their loved ones

Amazing experience - It’s been amazing going up for few steps on a massive glacier, seeing beautiful colours such as the blue ice and the black lava. Our guide has been very kind and has made us feel safe.

Cloudy, foggy, rainy and still amazing! - Although the weather was extremely rainy, foggy and cloudy, our guide was able to give us a great experience with a lot of interesting information about the glacier. The crampons we connected to our boots made ice walking really easy! There were plenty of stops to make going up the glacier not seem as daunting. Each stop was even more interesting and beautiful than the last. Our last stop took us down into a small ice cave where the blue ice made our jaws drop…a great place for pictures! We experienced a tiny taste of ice climbing and even took a drink of pure Icelandic water! The super-jeep ride was something we all thought was a cool experience in addition to the glacier hike. Overall, we loved our glacier hike!

Recommended! - Our guide Tomasz was very informative and emphasized on safety a lot - the weather was terrible so we didn't enter any cave and he explained why (which I think was the right decision as many rocks were falling). During our trip, Tomasz with his colleague found a tiny (but wonderful) ice cave in the glacier and took us there to show us the best things he could not forgetting about safety. We spent much time on glacier.

A blast with Thomas! - We had a blast with Thomas. He was both funny and knowledgeable and our whole family loved him! The large wheeled truck was fun to go off roading in (as well as the music) on the way to the glacier. We had great safety information, great sights, and wonderful information along the way. A fun afternoon.

Amazing - Great adventure. Lots of walking but doable. Our guide Tomas was great and the tour had the bonus of seeing an ice cave in July! This trek was the highlight of our stay in Iceland. Go before the glaciers are gone!
