• Swakopmund Jetty - During the colonial era, Swakopmund served as a crucial port, despite the fact that the maritime conditions were far from ideal. Luderitz was excessively distant to the south, and Walvis Bay was under British control.

Consequently, the Germans had no choice but to utilize Swakopmund. The process of landing troops and colonists via surf boats was perilous due to the intense surf.

With the onset of the Herero uprising in January 1904, the lack of sufficient mooring spots for the multitude of vessels delivering goods and military supplies to the nascent German colony became evident.

At certain points, as many as 25 vessels were moored offshore at Swakopmund, and the unloading process could take several weeks.
