Highlights
  • Sydney Opera House - Verdi’s La Traviata resonates with the spirit of liberty through soaring tunes, enlivens with exuberant drinking anthems, and touches us with intense duets of lovers with fracturing hearts.

La Traviata Synopsis:
Violetta, a courtesan who is the soul of every social gathering, hides a sorrowful secret beneath her radiant smile - she is terminally ill. Oblivious to her condition, the reserved Alfredo adores her. Violetta faces a dilemma: should she forsake her independent lifestyle for the allure of true love? She decides to risk it all for a pastoral life with Alfredo, and happiness seems within reach. However, Alfredo’s father intervenes with a heart-wrenching demand: for the sake of his family’s honor, Violetta must abandon Alfredo. Crushed by this, she consents and pens a goodbye to Alfredo, masking her true feelings. Alfredo, stricken with grief and anger, confronts her at a social event, where he publicly shames her. The question remains, will Alfredo discover the depth of Violetta’s love before her illness claims her life?

Bravo!! - The performance of La Traviata at the Sydney Opera was an absolute delight. The staging and costumes were beautiful and opulent just as required. Sophie Salvesani is a magnificent young soprano and was a vibrant Violetta! Thomas Dalton, a wonderful tenor, was a convincing Alfredo Germont and lyric baritone Luke Gabbedy sang the role of Giorgio Germont splendidly. The modest size of the stage and its relative nearness gave this viewer an intimate sense of the performance and almost the feeling of being a part of it. In this aspect, the Sydney Opera is much like the historic and celebrated Theater an der Wien in Vienna. In sum, my wife and l can only say “bravo, bravo, tutti bravi.”

Just incredible! The power of the voices, the original and refined settings, the magical lighting (the window), - wow, wow, wow! The power and sensitivity of the voices, the original and refined sets, the magical lighting (the window), the touching staging, the impeccable orchestra, the chemistry between Violietta (Sophie Salvesani) and Alfredo (Tomas Dalton)... Wow! I couldn't help but shed a few tears. We really believed in their sincere love. Note: the powerful duo between Violetta and Gorgio (the father-in-law)... what emotion! What a beautiful, memorable, moving and unforgettable evening. I had stars in my eyes. Well done to the Sydney Opera House and the whole team.

Do not purchase right wing seat. - Do not purchase right wing seats for the show. Most of performance happened on RHS which is the complete blind spot for right wing audiences. I could only hear the music and bunch of meerkats throughout the show. Please check your ticket, if your seat is in right wing, you will see what I saw.
