ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF DECEMBER 28 - DECEMBER 29, 2024

New Year’s Eve in Syracuse: A Dance of History and Culture

Embrace the allure of Syracuse this New Year’s Eve, where history and culture intertwine amidst the whispers of ancient streets. With rain-soaked cobblestones and clear skies, discover the city’s hidden gems and timeless traditions.

Whispers of the Past: A Rainy Day in Syracuse

As the rain taps gently against the cobblestones of Syracuse, the city seems to whisper secrets of its storied past. The overcast skies and the rhythmic patter of rain create a melancholic symphony, perfect for those who seek to explore the hidden corners of this ancient city. On December 28th, the weather may deter the faint-hearted, but for the intrepid traveler, it offers a unique opportunity to delve into the heart of Syracuse’s cultural tapestry.

Begin your journey with a visit to the Puppet Show at the Syracuse Museum of Puppets. Available at 5:00 PM, this intimate backstage experience is a portal to a bygone era. The puppets, with their intricate designs and storied past, come alive in a performance that transcends language. As the tales of valiant knights and mystical sorcerers unfold, you’ll find yourself transported to the Carolingian era, where folklore and tradition intertwine. The backstage tour reveals the dedication and passion that keep this art form alive, offering a glimpse into the soul of Sicilian craftsmanship.

“A step back in time in Italian Culture - It’s a lovely intimate theatre that showcases traditional Marionette Puppetry. The Marionettes are 4-5 ft tall. The dialogue is in Italian but before the show starts, the plot is explained in English. The show is 45 mins with no intermission- a little long considering you can’t really follow the dialogue- so I wouldn’t recommend it for young children. If you hang onto your theatre ticket, you can go into the Puppet Museum- about a 5 min walk down the road- for 1 Euro to see the history of this art form. I’d suggest that instead of the “ behind the scenes” option.” - Reviewed on 2024-10-21

A Glimpse of Serenity: Exploring Ortigia by Boat

As the clouds part on December 29th, revealing a clear sky, the city of Syracuse transforms. The gentle breeze carries the scent of the sea, inviting you to explore the crystalline waters that surround the island of Ortigia. The Ortigia Boat Tour, available from 10:00 AM, offers a unique perspective of Syracuse’s historic landmarks.

Embark on a journey that takes you past the Venetian Palace, the Spanish Walls, and the majestic Castello Maniace. The boat glides effortlessly through the azure waters, offering a serene escape from the bustling city. As you venture into the sea caves, the stalactites and stalagmites create an otherworldly landscape, a testament to nature’s artistry. This excursion is a reminder of the beauty that lies beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered by those who dare to look beyond the ordinary.

“Great short boat trip around Ortigia Island. - Great trip. Very interesting information. Very pleasant and relaxing experience. Can be highly recommended.” - Reviewed on 2024-10-08
