- Temple of Apollo - The guide will meet the group at their accommodation in Ortigia to begin this private walking tour, where they will uncover the rich history of Syracuse. Participants will explore the Cathedral Square, a world heritage site, featuring its luminous limestone structures - the Cathedral, the most significant baroque monument in Sicily, Palazzo Beneventano, which once served as the city’s senate, and St. Lucy’s Church, a Norman monument from the fifteenth century dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The tour proceeds to the Arethusa Fountain, where legend has it that the nymph Arethusa was transformed into a watercourse by her goddess Artemis/Diana to escape the advances of the persistent suitor Alpheus (Alfeo). The journey continues to the Jewish Quarter and Via Maestranza, the street where the town’s nobility resided in grand homes. Finally, the tour reaches Archimedes Square, where participants will view the neoclassical Fountain of Diana, a reminder of Syracuse’s illustrious past.
