Highlights
  • 3 Ortigia Street Market, - After meeting at the large white Ortigia sign in Piazza Pancali, Tonia will walk you through the island’s popular food market to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of this interesting piece of Sicilian history.

  • Za Bar - At this stop, you will enjoy the tour’s first savory item - a crispy flat bread, a pizzolo, stuffed with delicious accidentally-vegan caponata - and learn about its Sicilian and Arab-influenced food history.

  • Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo) - Learn a bit of history about one of the most important ancient Greek monuments in Sicily and spend a few minutes taking photos with the help of Tonia or taking selfies.

  • Corso Giacomo Matteotti - Enjoy a short stroll up Corso Matteotti which is one of the island’s popular streets and is lined with shops and boutiques. This will give you the opportunity to decide which shops to return to after the tour is completed.

  • Fountain of Diana - We will view the beautiful Fountain of Diana, learn about her story, enjoy the lovely Piazza Archimede, and have another opportunity to take Instagram-worthy photos. As usual, Tonia is happy to be your photographer.

  • Viola Bakery - Our second food stop includes your first sweet treat. This is a delicious opportunity to experience the popular Italian crostata. Whether breakfast, a snack, or dessert, anytime is a good time for crostata!

  • La Piazza Duomo - The grand Piazza Duomo is the highest point on the island of Ortigia and introduces you to the island’s gorgeous Baroque architecture. You can admire the exteriors of the stunning Siracusa Cathedral, the Palazzo Senatario (Town Hall), and the Santa Lucia Church. This is another wonderful opportunity for photos. Admission to the monuments is not included.

  • Sabadì - Bottega e Cantina di Affinamento del Cioccolato - Siracusa - This lovely artisan Sicilian chocolate shop features handcrafted, cold-pressed delights. All chocolate tastings are free and unlimited. It also makes excellent gifts.

  • Arethusa Spring - The beautiful Fountain offers a bit of mystery and mythology to the tour. You will learn about the tragic love story that brought this unique freshwater spring to the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. What adds to the wonder of this lovely spot are the papyruses, grasslike aquatic plants that are very rare in this part of the world. Plan to come back in the evening for the island’s beautiful sunset.

  • Maniace Castle - We will walk along the water to the stunning castle perched on the edge of Ortigia. This massive stone fortress protected the city of Syracuse for eight centuries. You’ll learn a bit about its long history, and we’ll have time for more photos! Admission to the Fortress is not included, but Tonia does recommend returning to explore the monument at your own pace. **This stop is time-dependent, so at the height of the busy season, it may not be included.

  • Giardino Aretusa - Next, we’ll wander through the lush, shady garden, along the sunny marina, before heading back to the center of Ortigia.

  • Arancina - Next is our third food stop that includes a savory Sicilian favorite - the arancina. This stop will give you the chance to sit, rest, and enjoy your meal while you learn more about the Arab-influenced street food staple.

  • Statua di Archimede - We will visit the Statue of Archimedes for a bit of history and our final photo opportunity!

  • Voglia Matta - This is our last sweet food stop and the tour’s grand finale! Whether you are craving sorbet, vegan gelato, or Sicilian granita, you will find a flavor or two to devour! Tonia will share a little more Sicilian food history and give her heartfelt goodbyes while you enjoy the cooling treat.

You don’t have to be vegan to love this tour! - This was one of the best tours we did in Sicily! Ortigia is a very special island to see, and the vegan food was so delicious! You do not need to be vegan to enjoy this tour. We had 4 non-vegans in our family on this tour and they all enjoyed the vegan food. The restaurants themselves were fun to visit to see how food is served in another country. Tonia knew all the restaurant owners, which made it a great experience. The restaurant MOON was especially pretty with fun decor and very kind owners. The walk around Ortigia was also a lot of fun and very interesting. Tonia was a special person and gave us a really memorable tour.

A great food for anyone that likes vegan dishes! - Even as a non-vegan I really enjoyed this food tour. All of the food choices were excellent. The walking pace was moderate, and mostly flat. Tonia knew the local history and interesting stories about the sites and attraction. She was very friendly and was happy to tell her backstory along with the local history. Time well spent!

A delicious start to Siracusa - Tonia Breuer’s vegan food tour of Siracusa is a great start to explore the culturally rich cuisine and history of Ortiga and Siracusa. Weaving through the tiny back streets, seeking out the hidden great tastes from family owned bars and restaurants offering vegan foods that, over generations, have melded the cuisine from multiple cultures into a rich tapestry of tastes, using local ingredients, all delicious. Tonia’s local knowledge and enthusiasm lights up this fun tour of experiences and really is great for vegans and non vegans alike.

Vegan culinary adventure in Sicily - We took this tour on our first full day in Ortigia, and we're so glad we did! Tonia was knowledgeable about the area and shared stories of the island's rich culinary and cultural heritage. We were delighted to be able to partake in traditional Sicilian food like cannoli, arancini, and gelato...all were amazing! Tonia also went out of her way to recommend additional plant based dining options for the rest of our vacation, as well as interesting sights to see. We returned to the restaurant Moon one evening for dinner and it was also incredible! This tour is a must-try experience for plant based food enthusiasts!

Do it on your first day! - Very enjoyable food tour. Tonia not only took us to try some really good bites but it was a little tour of Ortigia with history thrown in. It was a leisure tour with enough time to pick up some lovely vegetables at the local market and 10 bars of vegan choc from a lovely choc shop! I’m glad I did Tonia’s tour on the first day of our Sicily trip. It opened ny eyes to all the vegan possibilities for the rest of my stay. After the tour, she also wa a list of cafes/restaurants we can go to in Palermo. Thanks Tonia!
