Setting Sail to Teahupoo

The sun was just beginning to rise as I made my way to the marina in Teahupoo, a place that had long been on my bucket list. As a professional surfer, the legendary waves of Teahupoo have always called to me, and this boat tour promised a unique perspective on this iconic surf spot. The morning air was crisp, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and cinnamon pancakes greeted me as I boarded the boat. It was a small group, and I was thrilled to discover that I had lucked into a full-day adventure, thanks to the other passengers’ plans.

Our guide, Tau, was a delightful presence, effortlessly switching between French and English as she shared stories and insights about the region. As we cruised through the lagoon, the anticipation built. The first stop was the famous Teahupoo reef break, where the Tahiti Pro surf competition takes place. Watching the waves from the safety of the channel, I couldn’t help but analyze the conditions, imagining the thrill of riding those massive swells.

Exploring the Unreachable

Leaving the reef behind, we ventured further south to the Fenua Aihere, a part of Tahiti that remains untouched by roads and accessible only by boat. The landscape was breathtaking, with lush vegetation and dramatic cliffs rising from the water. Our next stop was a coral garden, where we donned our snorkeling gear and plunged into the vibrant underwater world. The clarity of the water and the diversity of marine life were mesmerizing, and I found myself lost in the moment, surrounded by schools of colorful fish.

Back on the boat, we continued our journey to the peninsula, where we docked for a hike along the coastline. The trail led us through a waterfall cave, emerging at a larger waterfall where we could swim and cool off. The experience was invigorating, and I relished the opportunity to connect with nature in such a pristine setting. As we made our way back to the boat, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chance to explore this hidden gem of Tahiti.

A Feast for the Senses

The final leg of our journey took us to the mouth of the Vaipoiri River, where we were treated to a feast of local delicacies. The spread included poke with coconut vegetable curry, Ume fish, fried rice, and BBQ chicken, all washed down with local beer and rum punch. As my fellow adventurers explored the river and swung on ropes, I opted for a more laid-back approach, lounging on the boat and soaking in the sun while listening to some chill tunes.

On our return journey, we were treated to the sight of four whales breaching in the distance, a fitting end to an unforgettable day. The camaraderie of the crew, including the captain’s dachshund, Tiki, added to the charm of the experience.
