- Senso-ji Temple - Tokyo’s most frequented temple houses a golden statue of Kannon (the Buddhist goddess of mercy), which, according to legend, was miraculously retrieved from the nearby Sumida-gawa by two fishermen in AD 628. The statue has remained there ever since but is never publicly displayed. The current structure dates back to 1958.
Sensō-ji is always bustling, especially on weekends; consider visiting in the evening to experience it with fewer crowds and beautifully lit buildings.

- Nakamise Shopping Street (Kaminarimon) - Asakusa’s Nakamise shopping street is believed to have originated between the late 17th and early 18th centuries when locals in Asakusa were allowed to open shops on the temple grounds. In exchange, the shopkeepers were expected to maintain cleanliness and order in the temple precincts. Even then, Sensoji Temple was a popular pilgrimage site, allowing Nakamise shopkeepers to thrive by providing food and drink to weary pilgrims. Over time, the street’s appearance has evolved significantly.
