- Senso-ji Temple - According to legend, in 628 AD, fishermen discovered a statue of Guanyin in the Sumida River and built Senso-ji Temple to house it. The temple features a massive red lantern inscribed with the Chinese characters for “Thunder Gate.” As a symbol of Asakusa, it draws numerous local and international visitors who come to take photos. The lantern stands nearly 4 meters tall and weighs 700 kilograms, making it quite impressive. Statues of the God of Wind and the God of Thunder flank the Thunder Gate.
