Highlights
  • Ritsurin Garden - Ritsurin Koen (栄林公園) is a landscape garden in Takamatsu City, built by the local feudal lords during the early Edo Period. Considered one of the best gardens in Japan, it is often suggested that Ritsurin Koen deserves a spot on the list of the “three most beautiful gardens of Japan” alongside Kanazawa’s Kenrokuen, Mito’s Kairakuen, and Okayama’s Korakuen.

The spacious park features many ponds, hills, historic trees and beautiful pavilions divided into a Japanese style garden in the south and western style garden in the north. The gardens are set in front of wooded Mt. Shiun which serves as a wonderful background and great example of borrowed scenery.

A fabulous tour in Takamatsu - We had a fabulous tour with Mari who had contacted us in advance and created an itinerary based on our interests. We had mentioned that we were interested in architecture and art and so she not only took us to certain structures designed by well known japanese architects, but also set up a private meeting with an owner of a Cafe where several famous Japanese artists used to meet and where some of their creations still remain. She organized everything in advance so we were able to pack in alot in 1 day.. such as pre-booking a boat trip for us, booking the tea room at Ritsurin gardens and having taxis waiting for us when needed. (It should be noted that we ran into other people from the cruise we were on who were unable to book the boat ride or the tea room because the wait was very long for those that did not have reservations. ) In addition Mari was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions We all think the highlight was the Ritsurin garden and highly recommend spending time there, taking the boat ride and tea at the tea house.

Takamatsu and Megijima with Mari - My trip was with Mari-san! She was an absolutely excellent tour guide. She helped me get around Megijima Island very easily as well as showed me Ritsurin Garden with an expert's eye. She was also helpful in coaching me with my Japanese, which I have been trying very hard to learn. She has a big network of contacts for fun touristy stuff to do as well, so if you're going to Takamatsu, she's the one to hire!
