- Takayama Museum of History and Art - The tour commences at Takayama Station and proceeds to the Takayama City Museum. Here, participants will delve into the region’s rich history, exploring the samurai-era governance and the flourishing merchant culture of the Edo period. The museum offers insights into the town’s history, highlighting the Kanamori family, the feudal lords who established Takayama and steered its growth over six generations.
Discover a collection of artifacts, historical documents, and captivating exhibits that provide a deeper understanding of the sites to be visited later. This seamlessly leads to the Higashiyama Walking Course, where history is vividly brought to life through its temples, shrines, and picturesque pathways.
- Higashiyama Walking Course - From the museum, embark on the Higashiyama Walking Course, a scenic 2-hour journey through a tranquil district of temples and shrines. Lord Kanamori Nagachika developed this temple area in the late 16th century, inspired by Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. Many temples along the route were relocated from the old castle area as part of Takayama’s urban planning during the Edo period. Along the way, visitors will pass through the Higashiyama Temple Area, home to over a dozen temples and shrines, including notable sites.
- Shiroyama Park - The course also includes a stroll through Shiroyama Park, now a wooded area that was once the site of Takayama Castle. Although only small remnants of the castle remain today, the area provides a serene setting with natural beauty and panoramic city views. As visitors walk through the park, the guide will share insights into its history and significance, bringing the past to life with stories of the former castle and its role in Takayama’s development. The gentle trails make this walk enjoyable for visitors, offering a relaxed and immersive experience in nature and history.
The tour concludes in the heart of Takayama’s Old Town, where participants are free to continue exploring at their own pace. Whether choosing to visit a sake brewery, enjoy a local meal, or browse artisan shops, the remainder of the day is theirs to enjoy. Guests are welcome to accompany the guide back to Takayama Station, where the tour began, or remain in the Old Town.
