La Leona Waterfall is situated in the quaint town of Curubande, just 20 minutes from Liberia. This remarkable waterfall, with its deep blue hue, is nestled between two canyons and is one of the few, if not the only, of its kind in Costa Rica. The water originates from the “white river” or “Rio Blanco,” which begins in the foothills of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. The stunning blue to turquoise color of the water is due to the presence of sulfur. It’s an absolute must-see in the region!
The adventure begins with a hike through a canyon and into the tropical forest. The majority of the trail runs alongside the Blanco River, with paths that lead through caves and occasionally require swimming to navigate around large rocks. (Not recommended for those with mobility impairments or children under 6 years old.)
The package includes a local guide, life jacket, admission fee for the waterfall, transportation, and lunch.
