Tamarindo, a vibrant beach town in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province, is known for its sun-drenched beaches and lively surf culture. But what happens when the forecast calls for rain? Fear not, for Tamarindo offers a unique charm even on a rainy weekend. As the skies turn a moody gray and the rain begins to fall, the town transforms into a lush, tropical retreat. The rain brings a refreshing coolness to the air, and the sound of raindrops on the palm leaves creates a soothing symphony. It’s the perfect time to slow down, relax, and embrace the natural beauty of this coastal paradise.
Start your day with a visit to the Las Baulas Wildlife Tour at Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. This early morning adventure, available from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM, takes you through the mangroves and tropical forests, where you’ll encounter a diverse array of wildlife. The rain adds an extra layer of magic to the experience, as the forest comes alive with the sounds of nature. Keep an eye out for herons, egrets, and monkeys as you kayak through the serene waters. The tour concludes with a short hike, offering a chance to stretch your legs and take in the lush surroundings.
Adventure Awaits: Buena Vista Vandara Hot Spring Combo Tour
For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Buena Vista Hot Springs Tour is a must-do. Available from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, this full-day excursion offers a mix of excitement and relaxation. Begin your journey with a scenic horseback ride through the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where you’ll be surrounded by the vibrant flora and fauna of Costa Rica. Next, get your adrenaline pumping with a canopy zip-line adventure. Soar through the treetops and take in the breathtaking views of the rainforest below. The rain adds an exhilarating twist to the experience, as the cool droplets hit your skin and the wind rushes past you. Afterward, unwind with a relaxing mud bath and soak in the natural hot springs. The warm waters provide a welcome respite from the rain, and you’ll leave feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.

Savoring the Local Flavors
No trip to Tamarindo is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The rain provides the perfect excuse to explore the town’s culinary scene, as you seek shelter in cozy cafes and vibrant restaurants. Start your culinary journey with a traditional Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto, a flavorful mix of rice and beans, served with eggs and plantains. Pair it with a cup of rich Costa Rican coffee, and you’ll be ready to take on the day.
For lunch, head to one of Tamarindo’s beachfront eateries and enjoy fresh seafood while watching the waves crash against the shore. The rain creates a dramatic backdrop, and you’ll feel a sense of tranquility as you savor each bite. In the evening, treat yourself to a dinner of casado, a hearty dish featuring rice, beans, salad, and your choice of meat.
