Highlights
  • Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja - National Park Hike

With our bilingual naturalist guide, you’ll walk 3.5-km (2 miles) in Las Pailas circular path through the tropical forest to enjoy the best views of the volcano, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife. The park is home to more than 300 species of birds, and many other animals, such as armadillos, bays, iguanas, coatis and white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, turkeys, and much more. You will stop to view the volcanic activity including bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and a mini crater. The Las Pailas sector spectacularly shows the power of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, the most active and largest volcano in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur come from natural fumaroles of the yellow and rusty soil. Witness clay pails in various shades of brown with boiling volcanic water, fine gray volcanic mud bubbles and explosions in large pails. This volcano is like no other in Costa Rica.

  • Oropendola Warterfall - After the hike, take a short walk off the beaten path to Oropendola Waterfall just outside of the park, where you can jump in and swim in the blue lagoon.

  • Rio Negro Hot Springs - Hot Springs & Volcanic Mud Bath
After lunch you will driven to the Hot Springs. Surrounded by tropical dry forest, the Río Negro (Black River) Hot Springs feature ten pools with thermal waters heated naturally by the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. The soothing mineral waters are crystal clear and all natural. One With Nature - This tour through Native Way was very informative and empowering. I have only hiked once before this trip and have now been emboldened to continue the trend. Our tour guide was Julio Cezar. Julio along with our driver Jose were absolutely phenomenal. Julio never stopped educating us the entire trip from beginning to end. He was pleasant, patient, insightful and informative. The landscape of each destination is lush and the scenery is unmatched. Everything from the hike, to the waterfall to the hot springs was just pure delight. After the tour we stopped for dinner and then to a gift shop that was enormous and filled with all kinds of cute and artsy wares. This tour was a 5 star experience and I highly recommend.

Beautiful views - Our guide was wonderful! I’m from Colorado so the hike was a nice walk. It rained on us but nothing terrible. It was a great experience.

Loved this tour! - The bubbling mud was super cool, as were all of the flora we saw. We were delighted to see some spider monkeys and an anteater up in the trees! It’s not an easy hike…you’ll go up and down quite a bit. Moderate rating is accurate. Our guide and driver were terrific. It was about 9 hours total, including pick up and drop off. One of our best days in CR!

Wow! Just WOW!! - Wow!!! Yes! Do it! This was an incredible tour with an amazing guide. Santos was friendly, welcoming, and very knowledgable. He stopped us along the hike to point out several plants, animals, trees and other things we may not have noticed on our own. He provided great information about the area and Costa Rica in general. The waterfall is like none other that I have ever experienced and the hot springs and mud bath are a must! Do it. Just book it now! You won’t regret.

Lots of sites to see - Overall great experience. Disappointed in the mud bath that wasn't really a bath, but a bowl of mud. Also, would liked to have more time at the hot springs.

A nice day trip - I’m a middle aged woman and went with my teenage kids. Nice trip to see the forest, volcano and hot springs. It is a long day and you have to be in pretty good shape to do the 2 hour hike. The guide Nicole was nice. They stop for you to purchase breakfast. The lunch they provide was delicious. We saw a few animals. The waterfall was beautiful but very cold and not very big to swim in. Overall a pleasant day!

A day full of activities - This was a long day but we did it and enjoyed it! You are able to see a variety of nature and weather along the volcano hike. I was able to take it easy as needed with my knee issues. There are lots of steps/stairs along the way and more to get to the waterfalls and hot springs. Just sharing so readers are aware.

Not for The Weak - This trip should have been listed for experienced hikers. The park is NOT accessible. So many huge steps going up and down. The hike is over 2 miles long. Getting to the waterfall is inaccessible with any mobility issues. Steep steps and ladder. It is beautiful but not for the weak as the rocks make it very difficult to stand in the water. The hot springs are beautiful and relaxing but again very inaccessible with steep steps. Our guide, Diego looked unhappy to be there and gave very minimal information as to what we were looking at. He failed to let us know what we were actually in for. I hit my head against a low tree which I was not told about. He also kept saying just a few more steps when that wasn’t the case. Disappointing and difficult overall.

AN UNPROFESSIONAL AND ETHICALLY CORRUPT COMPANY! AVOID! - I was extremely excited to do this tour to celebrate my friend’s birthday and also an early 30th birthday present for myself. However I woke up on the morning of the tour with a horrible sickness - forcing me to stay in bed for the entire day. Aware of the cancellation policy, I hoped I could appeal to their ethical side considering my circumstances were very much beyond my control - and asked whether I could change the date of my tour. What has ensued is an entirely frustrating back and forth with “management”. They initially offered me an amendment to my tour if I could provide a doctor’s note. Although unnecessary to go to the doctor’s with my sickness - as it seemed to be a cold / potentially COVID - I decided to go the next day, just for the sake of transferring my tour. Only to receive a further email from the company at 8pm stating that if the doctor’s note was not dated for the early hours on the day of the tour, then they would not be able to help. HOW RIDICULOUS! YOU CAN’T TELL ME THAT IN HINDSIGHT! Native’s Way have consistently placed hoops and obstacles in my way all for the sake of $150 US? As a big company, operating across the entire country, with multiple tours and services a day - transferring my ticket would be the honourable thing to do. Helping me by empathising with my situation and simply reallocating the tour to another day would have gained them a happy and repeat customer. But they ruined that chance. I feel as if I have completely wasted a considerable amount of money. They have marred my trip. And considering the tour would have gone ahead without me, irrespective of me being there - it feels even more frustrating. I will not be using their services again and will tell folks who I know that are travelling to Costa Rica to take heed of their greed.
