The Serengeti is a sanctuary for a variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, cheetahs, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, elands, wild dogs, gazelles, crocodiles, and a plethora of bird species, among them migrants from Eurasia.

The Serengeti is also famous for its abundant lion population, offering one of the prime opportunities to see these big cats in their natural habitat. The area encompasses the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and several game reserves.
Around 70 species of large mammals and 500 bird species inhabit this region, thanks to a variety of ecosystems such as riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands, and woodlands. Commonly sighted large mammals include blue wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and buffalos.
