Standing at an impressive height of 4,566 meters, Mt Meru is the second tallest peak in Tanzania and ranks as the fifth tallest on the African continent. Approximately 250,000 years in the past, a huge volcanic explosion decimated the entire eastern side of the mountain, giving it the unique shape it has today. The journey up Mt Meru traverses through several distinct vegetation zones. Starting from a dry forest at the base, it progresses to a dense rainforest, which subsequently changes to a scrubland. As you approach the peak, the vegetation gradually thins out, leading to a stark alpine landscape.
The changing vegetation is accompanied by a shift in wildlife as well. On your climb, you may encounter a variety of large animals such as buffaloes, giraffes, colobus monkeys, baboons, and antelopes. Don’t worry, though, as the park rules mandate an armed ranger accompany all climbers for safety.
