Day 1 - Welcome to Moshi, Time to Get Acquainted | 3,000-ft/914-m
Mount Kilimanjaro - As the plane heads to Kilimanjaro, excitement builds, knowing this journey will be extraordinary. Upon arrival, a driver swiftly takes you to the charming Bristol Cottages Hotel in Moshi, your base for the next two nights.
Here, relaxation and preparation for the upcoming challenge await. Settling into your room, the thought of the climb fills you with eagerness. After a delightful meal, a refreshing shower, and a cozy bed, you’re ready for the adventure ahead!
Day 2 - Moshi - Meet Your Guides and Begin Orientation | 3,000-ft/914-m
Mount Kilimanjaro - Meeting the Tusker Mountain Guides for climb orientation and final equipment check is thrilling, filled with excitement. It’s a great chance to connect with team leaders and fellow climbers, sharing thoughts about the climb.
Post gear check, a guide takes you and the group for lunch in Moshi, a vibrant Tanzanian town. Here, explore the colorful Moshi market at Kilimanjaro’s base, immersing in the lively culture and getting a taste of the adventure ahead!
Day 3 - Mti Mkubwa | 9,170-ft/2,795-m • 2.5 miles/4 km • 3 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - The journey begins with excitement at Londerossi on the western slopes. Entering the lush Lemosho Glades in the montane forest, where vegetation thrives and trees reign. Trekking through the dense forest, the majestic Hartlaub’s Turaco with its stunning purple plumage and the calls of Colobus monkeys greet us.
Our knowledgeable guides, experts on local flora and fauna, use Eddie and Amy Frank’s Field Guide to identify plant species. After four awe-inspiring hours, we reach Tusker camp, nestled deep in the rainforest amidst the towering trees of Mti Mkubwa.
Day 4 ~ Shira Plateau | 11,500-ft/3,505-m • 5.2 miles/8.4 km • 7-8 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, we hit the trail, leaving the lush rainforest behind. Our path leads upward to the Shira Plateau, a caldera formed by the collapse of Kilimanjaro’s original peaks: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.
We break for lunch, then continue, climbing along the steep ridge towards the caldera’s edge at 11,560-ft/3,534-m. Trekking through fields of heath and moorland, the landscape opens up, offering breathtaking views of the caldera and our first view of Kibo Peak.
Day 5 ~ Moir Camp | 13,650-ft/4,160-m • 6.3 miles/10 km • 7-8 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - With a hearty breakfast, we head northeast across the rugged Shira Plateau. Our destination is Moir Camp, a hidden gem at the end of a colossal gorge, flanked by a giant lava flow. Before reaching our final stop, we enjoy a hot lunch at Fisher Camp, halfway to Moir Camp.
Day 6 ~ Barranco | 12,950-ft/3,950-m • 6.2 miles/9.9 km • 6-7 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - At dawn, we trek uphill into the Alpine zone, towards the imposing Lava Tower at 15,200-ft/4,633-m. Reaching the tower’s base, we take a break for lunch, allowing our bodies to adjust to the altitude.
The steep 2,000-ft/610-m descent into Barranco Canyon takes us through a unique habitat, where Giant Senecios tower over us, and solitary Lobelias mark the trail. Our camp lies at the foot of the imposing Barranco Wall, with climbers buzzing with excitement for the next morning’s climb.
Day 7 ~ Karanga | 13,200-ft/4,023-m • 3.6 miles/5.8 km • 4-5 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - As the sun rises, we face our first major test: the imposing Barranco Wall. Our endurance and agility are tested as we climb this formidable obstacle. Throughout the day, we’re mesmerized by Kibo Peak’s majestic presence, towering over us.
Descending sharply into the Karanga Valley, we pause to catch our breath before the final ascent to Karanga Camp, nestled at Kibo’s foot. Settling in for the night, we savor the adrenaline rush and sense of accomplishment after another thrilling leg of this epic journey.
Day 8 ~ Barafu | 14,950-ft/4,556-m • 2.1 miles/3.4 km • 3-4 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - We move slowly towards Barafu High camp over rocky terrain. The thin air requires more breaks, but spirits remain high, knowing the rewards are worth it.
Barafu camp, aptly named “ice” in Swahili, lives up to its chilly reputation. An electric energy fills the camp, fueled by the thrill of the climb and the imminent challenge of reaching the summit tomorrow. As clouds dance around, the awe-inspiring Mawenzi peak looms, bathed in the warm African sun.
Day 9 ~ Barafu to Summit to Millennium | Summit: 19,340-ft/5,895-m • 2.75 miles/4.5 km • 7-9 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - With adrenaline pumping, the climb begins before sunrise. The steep ascent is no match for determination as the Crater rim is reached by mid-day.
The sight of Mawenzi Peak and the towering ice-walls of the crater fuel excitement. The ultimate prize, Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is just an hour away. At the summit, breathtaking views create an unforgettable moment. Choose to descend into the Crater and camp for the night, or continue to Barafu Camp.
Day 10 ~ Millennium Camp: 12,590-ft/3,837-m • 6.3 miles/10.1 km • 5-6 hours
Mount Kilimanjaro - The descent through the scree is exhilarating. Navigating the steep mountain, adrenaline rushes with each step. After two hours, Barafu is reached for a much-needed lunch break.
Continuing on, the magnificent Millennium Camp is finally reached. Settling in for the night, a sense of adventure and awe fills the air. It’s the last night on Mount Kilimanjaro, relishing the moment, enjoying a deep sleep before the final descent to the national park gate.
Day 11 ~ Moshi: Mweka Gate: 5,500-ft/1,676-m • 7.5 miles/12 km • 6 hours ~ Drive Moshi • 30 mins
Mount Kilimanjaro - With a sense of accomplishment, the final leg of the climb begins. The downhill hike from Millennium Camp to the National Park Gate marks the journey’s end. Signing out, memories of the challenging climb, stunning views, and camaraderie with the climbing team are cherished. A short ride back to the Bristol Cottages Hotel in Moshi awaits, where a well-deserved hot shower and cold drink refresh. In the evening, a celebratory group dinner reflects on the extraordinary feat with pride and satisfaction.
DAY 12: Safari Day-1 - Tarangire National Parks
Lake Manyara National Park - Embark on an exhilarating safari adventure through Tanzania’s premier National Parks, where an extraordinary encounter with Africa’s wild animals awaits discovery!
Stay at one of Tanzania’s iconic traditional wildlife lodges, perched on the edge of the Rift Valley escarpment, with spectacular views of the vast African plains.
DAY 13: Safari Day-2 - Lake Manyara National Parks & Depart Tanzania
