Kilimanjaro National Park - The adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate. After registering and receiving a brief orientation, the journey through a lush rainforest commences. The path is lined with vibrant trees, and there is a chance to spot some wildlife. The hike lasts approximately 5 to 7 hours, covering a distance of around 11 km (7 miles), before arriving at Machame Camp, situated at an elevation of 3,010 meters (9,875 feet).
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - On the second day, the trail becomes steeper as the rainforest gives way to the moorland zone. The landscape transforms dramatically, offering stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The trek takes about 4-6 hours, covering 5 km (3 miles), leading to Shira Camp, which is at 3,840 meters (12,600 feet) above sea level.
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - This day is crucial for acclimatization. The hike ascends to Lava Tower, reaching 4,630 meters (15,190 feet), where lunch and a rest are taken. Following this, the descent to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters (13,000 feet) begins. The trek spans about 10 km (6 miles) and takes 6-8 hours. Descending to Barranco Camp aids in acclimatization, facilitating further ascent.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day starts with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, which is steep yet safe, requiring no special climbing skills. Upon reaching the top, breathtaking views of the landscape unfold. The trail then continues through a dry, open area to Karanga Camp, located at 4,035 meters (13,250 feet). The hike is approximately 5 km (3 miles) and takes 4 to 5 hours.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The trek to Barafu Camp is brief but steep, as the elevation increases. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to cover 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) through the rocky alpine desert. Barafu Camp, at 4,640 meters (15,220 feet), is the preparation point for the final ascent to the summit. After an early dinner, rest is essential for the upcoming challenge.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The ascent to the summit begins around midnight. This is the most challenging part of the trek due to the steep and loose terrain. After 7-8 hours of climbing, Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is reached. This is a moment to celebrate a remarkable achievement.
After some time at the summit, the descent to Barafu Camp for a brief rest follows. The journey continues down to Mweka Camp, at 3,110 meters (10,200 feet). The total distance for the day is about 17 km (11 miles), taking 12-15 hours in total.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Kilimanjaro National Park - The final day involves a descent through the enchanting rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is lush and vibrant, with opportunities to see wildlife. The walk is about 3-4 hours long, covering 10 km (6 miles). At Mweka Gate, a summit certificate is awarded.
