After establishing their dominion, the German Colonial Government inaugurated the present-day Lushoto in 1898, naming it “Wilhelmsthal” (in honor of the German emperor), which emerged as a significant hub for colonial habitation and agricultural estates. Situated at an elevation of 1,400 meters, the area’s cool, subtropical climate was particularly appealing to European colonists. By 1912, the district boasted 13 plantations.
