Here, park formalities are completed, and the team of skilled guides and porters is met. The trek commences with a walk through the lush rainforest, where vibrant flora and fauna can be seen. The day’s journey spans about 8 kilometers and is relatively straightforward. The first overnight stop is Mandara Hut, located at an elevation of around 2,700 meters.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

This part of the journey provides views of Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro’s iconic features. The trek covers approximately 12 kilometers, with the night’s destination being Horombo Hut, situated at an altitude of about 3,700 meters.
Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Proper acclimatization is essential for a successful summit attempt. This day is dedicated to helping the body adjust to the increasing altitude. A short hike to Zebra Rocks, offering scenic views, can be taken, or relaxation at Horombo Hut is an option. Rest and acclimatization are crucial for the upcoming challenges.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today’s hike leads to Kibo Hut, located at an altitude of approximately 4,700 meters. The landscape changes dramatically as the alpine desert zone is entered. The first glimpse of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, the dormant volcanic cones, is seen. The hike is challenging due to the increased altitude, so pacing and hydration are vital.
Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - This is the most challenging and exhilarating day of the trek. The ascent to the summit begins in the early morning hours, reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, just before sunrise. The climb is both physically and mentally demanding but incredibly rewarding. After celebrating the achievement at the summit, the descent to Kibo Hut begins, continuing down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Kilimanjaro National Park - The final day of the Kilimanjaro trek leads from Horombo Hut back to the Marangu Gate. As the descent continues, the heath and rainforest zones are passed through, with possible sightings of wildlife like colobus monkeys and birds. Upon reaching the Marangu Gate, summit certificates are received, and farewells are bid to the dedicated guides and porters.
The 6-day Marangu Route provides an incredible opportunity to conquer Kilimanjaro’s summit while experiencing diverse ecosystems and breathtaking landscapes.
