Machame Gate (1790m) to Machame Camp (3010m)

Kilimanjaro Region - A one-hour drive from Moshi brings us to the Machame route gate, where we handle park formalities, meet our team of porters, and begin our ascent! The initial part of the trail climbs steadily through a stunning, dense rainforest. This path is less frequented, so it can be somewhat overgrown and often wet and muddy.

Machame Camp (3010m) to Shira Camp (3845m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - The route continues through the forest until we reach a steep climb onto the Shira Plateau, offering rewarding views of the mountain. Looking back, you can see Mt Meru towering above Arusha town in the distance.

Shira Cave (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - Now walking on high Moorland, the landscape dramatically changes the trek’s character. We traverse Kilimanjaro’s southwest side, passing beneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach, eventually reaching camp. Although we spend the day at high altitude (up to 4600m), we follow the mountaineering principle of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to help your body acclimate.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - The day begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine. We then make a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates us from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. The climb is over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga Valley. From there, we have a steep climb up to our camp at Karanga, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, we will take a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before returning to camp for the night.

Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off for Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb takes us across barren scree slopes with no vegetation. It’s a tough, steep walk made more challenging by the altitude. Upon reaching camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting in preparation for the long night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. We have an early dinner and try to sleep, as we will be waking up between 11pm and 12am to start the summit climb.

Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)

Mount Kilimanjaro - We begin around midnight, climbing steeply to the summit glaciers. We will ascend scree for 4 to 5 hours, gaining significant height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should reach Stella Point (5739m) on the crater rim as the first rays of the sun appear. Surrounded by stunning ice cliffs within the crater, the views of jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walk brings us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We start our descent by returning to Stella Point, then descending the scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.

Trek Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)

Kilimanjaro National Park - A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates to proudly display! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a welcome shower (and perhaps a cold beer or two!) before our big celebration.
