Umbwe Gate To Cave Bivouac Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Depart Moshi at 8am for Umbwe Gate, where the porters, guides, and cooks will join the trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, over the next six days. Upon arrival, wait at the gate for climb registration and final preparations by the porters and guides. The first day’s goal is Cave Bivouac Camp, about a 6-hour trek from the gate. The path is steep and can be slippery in parts.
Trek through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest, with trees draped in moss. As the hike progresses, the forest will thin, revealing heathers, tall grasses, and wildflowers. Porters and cooks will advance to set up camp before your arrival.
Cave Bivouac Camp To Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Begin the day early with a hot cup of tea or coffee. After breakfast, climb steeply through thinning forest glades to reach Giant Erica, Heather, and drier air.
Continue along a ridge with steep drops on both sides, hoping for clear skies to reveal Uhuru Peak above. After lunch, enter a zone of giant groundsels (Scenario Kilimanjaro), a unique treasure of Kilimanjaro.
Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - An extra day for acclimatization is included here. This additional day will make the trek easier and enhance acclimatization.
Barranco Camp To Karanga Valley
Mount Kilimanjaro - Depart Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day starts with a 1.5-hour scramble up the Barranco Wall, the most challenging part of the day, requiring hand support in some areas. After reaching the top, traverse fairly level terrain before a short but steep descent into the lush Karanga River Valley.
Karanga Valley To Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, set out for Barafu Camp. En route, view several of Kibo’s glaciers and the junction connecting the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. On day four, pass by the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu traverses an alpine desert with sparse vegetation, Barafu Camp offers breathtaking views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to rest after dinner as the summit hike begins before midnight.
Barafu Camp To Uhuru Peak To Mweka Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Around midnight, start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Use a headlamp to guide the six-hour hike. The ascent to the crater rim is the trek’s most demanding section, with a steep trail leading to Stella Point.
The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and relatively easy, though the altitude makes it long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes about an hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, capture photos with your guide and group at the peak before descending to Mweka Camp. Enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds, and glaciers on the way down from Uhuru.
Mweka Camp To Mweka Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, conclude the trek with a hike through the forest to Mweka Gate. The trail may be slippery if it has rained. Vehicles will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to transport you back to Moshi.
