- Porta Messina - Embark on “The Godfather” tour starting from Taormina, where you’ll stroll through the charming, unchanged streets of Savoca and Forza d’Agro, visit historic churches, the renowned Bar Vitelli where Michael Corleone asked for Apollonia’s hand in marriage, the church where they wed, and other iconic movie locations. Afterwards, savor a traditional lunch featuring locally produced cheeses, salami, prosciutto, caponata, parmigiana, olives, extra virgin olive oil, fresh homemade bread, and lemon sorbet, all while enjoying a romantic sea view from the terrace.
-
Savoca - The first stop is Savoca, a pristine medieval town that served as the stand-in for Corleone, where Michael hid during the “going to the mattresses” period. You’ll visit the ancient church of Santa Lucia, where Michael and Apollonia were married, and follow the same path down the hill that the newlyweds took, visiting another old church from the 13th century. As you wander the enchanting streets of Savoca, you might even encounter some actors, such as the lady who played Apollonia’s mother and still resides in Savoca.
Later, you have the option to visit a family-owned restaurant and enjoy local Sicilian wines and traditional food on a terrace with a romantic sea view. The menu includes locally produced cheeses, salami, prosciutto, caponata, olives, extra virgin olive oil, fresh homemade bread, and homemade lemon granita, all prepared with organic, locally sourced ingredients (“km0”). - Bar Vitelli - In Savoca, you’ll visit Bar Vitelli, which looks just as it did in the movie. You’ll see the exact spot where Al Pacino’s character informed Apollonia’s father of his identity, and you can take photos with an authentic Sicilian shotgun “Lupara,” view movie stills and a mirror monument dedicated to Coppola, enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean from the square where the wedding scene was filmed, purchase “The Godfather” souvenirs, and taste original Sicilian cannoli and lemon granita at Bar Vitelli.
- Forza d’Agro - The tour continues in Forza d’Agro, another breathtaking hilltop town with ties to “The Godfather.” You’ll walk through its deserted streets (“Where have all the men gone?” - “They’re dead from vendettas”), explore the historic square and view movie stills, visit ancient churches, see the piazza where young Vito Andolini (later Vito Corleone) escaped Don Ciccio’s men by hiding in a basket on a donkey’s back, climb to the remains of a 12th-century Norman castle, admire stunning panoramic views of the Ionian coastline, and experience the unchanged Sicilian pastoral lifestyle.
