Educational look at Taos art scene and history. - Sam is a wonderful resource for all things historical in Taos. We thoroughly enjoyed his stories, aided by his collection of pictures and art. He helped us appreciate the art and culture around us.

An historical tour including all the colorful characters that shaped this town - We had a very interesting walking tour of Taos. Our guide, Sam, toured us through Taos with interesting stories about the colorful characters that shaped the town's history. We especially enjoyed the artistic journey through 3 generations of artists. We were able to enjoy the rest of our day trying out many of Sam's recommendations. It was a great value and it exceeded our expectations. We would definitely recommend this tour as a great way to introduce you to this amazing town.

Delightful - We so enjoyed our time with Sam today. His stories and visuals (including his own drawings), together with walking around to the sites, brought the history of Taos to life. It was interesting to visit several galleries of local art and to actually meet a couple of the artists.
I hope to come back to Taos, I will engage Sam again. I suspect he has many more stories to tell.

Sam’s Taos Tour - Enjoyed Sam’s stories, personality and humor. Also, he took an interest in our group members. Only suggestion for improvement would be to speak a little louder. Sometimes traffic noise drowned out his voice. Overall, very enjoyable.

GREAT, informative tour with Sam! - Sam who is a vet, artist, makes jam AND a storyteller was a delightful and informative guide. Yes, he took us into some art galleries but Taos’ evolving history is woven into artist who came and changed the timbre of the city. We were really glad to have had this experience with Sam. Oh and yes, we were a group of 8 but none fo that impacted the enjoyment of the tour.

A must tour in Taos! - Sam did a fantastic job on our tour. He took us into several galleries giving us info on the owner/artist before we entered. The artists provided background and details about their work. Sam was entertaining and so knowledgeable about Taos history. He gave us a challenge to see a few movies involving Taos scenes and the actors involved in the movies. Also a written list of books about Taos that we could read to learn more. Sam was indeed a tour guide extraordinaire! This tour is worth every penny and more. I encourage everyone who will visit Taos to book this tour!

Worth the time but perhaps not suitable for children. - Had mixed expectations for the tour as the reviews were well and truly mixed with some bad ones sliding in citing Sam's inability to keep politics out of it, others claiming he showed their family indecent images, and still others whining about how he focused the tour on his own artwork. All comments were true, but not accurate. He definitely has strong political views but as long as we didn’t provide an opening, he didn’t venture too far down that road. The indecent images? Well, D.H. Lawrence, the author of Lady Chatterly’s Lover, after relocating to Taos, took up painting nudes. Sam showed us a picture of one (no frontal imagery at all) and briefly discussed the scandal involved with Lawrence’s new career. As far as his artwork was concerned, yep, he had it, and lots of it. It was, appropriately enough, used as visual aids during the tour. Portraits, buildings, film posters, etc.
While we aren’t ready to give the tour five stars, it was quite informative and, in general, enjoyable. I must point out that part of the reduced rating is through no fault of his own. At the time of our tour there was considerable construction in the area that not only interfered with getting to the meetup, but in some areas actually interfered with the tour.
Bottom line? It's worth the time, but remember it's a person's view of history and viewpoints may vary.

The Taos Plaza - The small portion with history stories. Sam knows a lot of the shopkeepers/artists, and showed us those stores.

Okay. - As others have said, this is NOT a private tour, which I thought I was paying for. I was surprised and not particularly happy that we spent time in several private galleries (which is my bad for not carefully reading the info on this site). We also went into an artist's collective, where Sam led us to his own artwork. Also as others have mentioned, there was no real pressure to buy but I felt a bit uncomfortable.
The entire tour was in an area directly around the plaza which was fine since there's a lot of history close in. Sam also gave us a reading list. It was all okay but I can only give a 3 out of 5.
