Highlights
  • Cristo Rei - Visit the Portuguese sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, offering some of the most stunning views of Lisbon. The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, overlooking Lisbon from Almada, Portugal. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument. The project was inaugurated on May 17, 1959. The giant statue was erected to express gratitude for Portugal being spared from the direct destructive effects of World War II.
  • Jose Maria de Fonseca - Visit one of the oldest wine cellars in Portugal. Includes:
  • Interior visit and tour of the wine cellar with a tour guide
  • Wine-tasting of 2 wines
  • Opportunity to shop for some of the best wines in the region and enjoy more tastings
Discover a visionary family with almost two centuries of history, the creators of wines that are true emblems of our country. It all began over six generations ago in 1834, with an act of irreverence and audacity from the founder, Jose Maria da Fonseca. For some, it may have seemed like a thoughtless act, but for many, it was a visionary’s first step.
  • Azeitao - Explore the small historical village of Azeitão, with a local pastry from the region included - the famous Tortas de Azeitão!
  • Portinho da Arrabida - Visit the stunning landscape of Arrábida Natural Park, a protected mountain area with some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, including views of:
  • Troia
  • Comporta (the longest beach in Europe)
  • Portinho da Arrábida beach
  • Figueirinha Beach
  • Setubal - Visit the fishing village of Setubal, enjoy lunch, and visit the Fort São Filipe. The fort was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (Philip I of Portugal), who personally witnessed the laying of the cornerstone of the new fortification in 1582. It stands in a dominant position on the right bank of the mouth of the Sado River, overlooking the center of Setúbal to its east and guarding access to the river. Named after the king during the Iberian Union, the fortress was designed by Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino and had the Italian military engineer Filipe Terzi, who worked for the Spanish Royal Court, as its chief engineer. It was completed in 1600 under the guidance of Leonardo Torreano due to the death of Terzi.
  • Castelo de Palmela - Visit the magnificent castle of Palmela with views of the Atlantic Ocean, Tagus, and Sado River. During the Christian Reconquest led by the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, Palmela was part of the defensive line built south of the Tagus. At that time, the king bestowed the lands of Palmela, Almada, and Alcácer to the Order of Sant´Iago de Espada, which took on responsibility for their defense and settlement. In 1205, King Sancho I reaffirmed this gift, installing the Order´s Chapter in the castle.

In the 15th century, King João I initiated a series of restoration projects, particularly focusing on the donjon tower, and decreed the construction of the convent that would become the Order´s headquarters from 1443. The castle underwent further alterations in the 17th century, during the reign of King Pedro II.

The Santiago convent remained active until the prohibition of religious orders in 1834. After a period of abandonment, the building was restored by the state in 1945.
