Sunlit Secrets of Taroudant: A Winter’s Tale of Adventure
Experience the enchanting warmth of Taroudant this winter, where clear skies and gentle breezes set the stage for a weekend of exploration. Discover ancient walls and hidden oases, as the city’s rich history and vibrant culture unfold under the sunlit skies.
The Enigmatic Walls of Taroudant
As the sun rises over Taroudant, the ancient walls stand as silent sentinels, whispering tales of a bygone era. The city, once the capital of the Saadian dynasty, is a labyrinth of history and culture waiting to be unraveled. On the morning of January 11th, the weather is clear, and the air is crisp, perfect for embarking on a journey through time. The Zamana Capital Tour offers a guided exploration of the city’s red earthen walls, a testament to its resilience and grandeur.
The tour begins at 8:30 AM, as the city awakens under the gentle warmth of the winter sun. The medina, with its maze of streets and alleyways, is a living museum of Moroccan craftsmanship. Artisans work diligently, their hands weaving stories into leather, copper, and silver. The souks are alive with the scent of spices and the vibrant colors of textiles, a sensory feast that lingers long after the day is done.
“8 of us did a wonderful tour out to this historic site. It was extremely hot that day but Mohamed made sure we had shade here and there. We went to a Berber village and had the most delightful lunch. We were not expecting this and we were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food tasted. Our host for the meal wanted to show us an oasis and off we went to see that and that was very nice as well. We would recommend this tour highly. Believe it or not, we even got to see the goats up in the trees eating the leaves off the argon tree. We thought this was a joke when our guide showed us the trees on our way for the tour. Well, we did see it and all eight of us thoroughly enjoyed our God and our time in Morocco.” - Reviewed on 2017-11-30
The Oasis of Tiout: A Hidden Gem
The following day, as the sun casts its golden glow over the city, the allure of the Tiout Palm Grove beckons. Just a short drive from Taroudant, this verdant oasis is a stark contrast to the arid landscape that surrounds it. The Tiout Palm Grove Tour departs at 9:00 AM, offering a day of exploration and discovery.
The journey begins with a stop at Aït Hassassa, where goats defy gravity, perched atop argan trees, nibbling on the precious nuts. It’s a sight that borders on the surreal, a reminder of nature’s whimsy. As the tour continues, the ruins of the Tiout Kasbah loom in the distance, a relic of the past now serving as a picturesque restaurant.
Lunch is a traditional affair, with tajine and couscous served amidst panoramic views of the High Atlas and Souss Valley. The oasis itself is a lush paradise, where palm trees sway gently in the breeze, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of dates. A local guide leads the way, offering insights into the history and culture of this hidden gem.
“An interesting trip to an original Morocco - I was picked up in Taghazout by a separate driver and taken to the group in Agadir. Then we went straight to Taroudant. We drove around the old town and then visited the market. The guide explained a lot. Then we went on to Tiout to the oasis for lunch. We had a delicious meal in a very authentic restaurant before walking with another guide down through the oasis with its many palm trees. Here you can also have a donkey carry you for a small fee. But you should be a good walker on this tour! These are not well-developed paths like in Germany. It was very, very hot, but there was water to buy everywhere along the way.” - Reviewed on 2024-04-17
