Highlights
  • Tatev Monastery - Tatev monastery is situated near the village of the same name in part of Zangezur - ancient Syunik.

Tatev monastery was built during the 9-13th centuries as an Armenian intellectual center where philosophers, musicians, painters, calligraphers, and monks lived. This monasterys teachers produced manuscripts for the whole Armenian world. The earthquake of 1931 caused considerable destruction, but the parts that survived enable us to judge about the artistic merits of the complex.

The main monument is the Church of Poghos and Petros (Peter and Paul) built in 895-906. It reproduces the type of domed basilicas of the 7th century, but has new features. Tatev ensemble fits in perfectly with the mountainous landscape around it. A large church, dominating the surrounding structures and visible from afar, is the architectural and artistic center of the ensemble.

Nestled on a precipice of a serpentine canyon above the Amaghu River, close to Yeghegnadzor, the majestic Noravank Monastery dates back to the 13th century. The monastery’s stark architecture contrasts strikingly with the craggy crimson cliffs that surround it, creating a dramatic backdrop that makes Noravank a must-see destination. Among the monastery’s most impressive structures is the two-tiered St. Astvatsatsin Church, erected in 1339 by Prince Burtel Orbelyan. At its heart, an ornate dome is intricately embellished with arching pillars and finely sculpted cornices.

Perched near its namesake village within the ancient region of Syunik, known as Zangezur, stands the venerated Tatev monastery.

Tatev monastery came into existence between the 9th and 13th centuries, serving as a hub of Armenian enlightenment where scholars, musicians, artists, scribes, and monastics convened.
