• Ararat Province - Khor Virap is renowned as Armenia’s most significant pilgrimage site, closely linked to the country’s adoption of Christianity. Christianity became the state religion in Armenia in 301, thanks to the efforts of Saint Gregory The Illuminator. Before converting King Trdat III to Christianity, Saint Gregory was imprisoned in a dungeon, over which the Khor Virap Monastery church was constructed in the 17th century. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Biblical Mount Ararat from the monastery.
• Noravank Monastery - The stunning Noravank Monastery, dating back to the 13th century, is perched on a ledge above the narrow, winding gorge of the Amaghu River, near Yeghegnadzor. The church’s simple lines contrast beautifully with the sharp red rock cliffs, creating a dramatic landscape that is a highlight of visiting Noravank. Sometimes referred to as Amagu Noravank to distinguish it from the Noravank Monastery in Goris, Amagu was a small settlement once located above the gorge. The most impressive structure in the monastery is the two-story St. Astvatsatsin Church, built in 1339 by Prince Burtel Orbelyan. This building is a classic architectural masterpiece. The rectangular church stands on a robust high foundation, giving it a majestic and monumental presence. The main facade of the temple is cross-shaped, adorned with a carved cross and several saints. The church’s center features a beautiful dome decorated with arched columns and modelled eaves towers.

• Tatev Monastery - Located near the village of the same name in the Zangezur region, ancient Syunik, Tatev Monastery was established between the 9th and 13th centuries as an Armenian intellectual hub where philosophers, musicians, painters, calligraphers, and monks resided. The monastery’s educators produced manuscripts for the entire Armenian world. Although the 1931 earthquake caused significant damage, the surviving parts allow us to appreciate the complex’s artistic value.

The main monument is the Church of Poghos and Petros (Peter and Paul), constructed between 895-906. It replicates the domed basilicas of the 7th century but incorporates new features. The Tatev ensemble harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding mountainous landscape. A large church, dominating the nearby structures and visible from afar, serves as the architectural and artistic centerpiece of the ensemble.

• Syunik Province - On October 16, 2010, the church bells in Tatev rang loudly, marking the start of a program to restore a medieval monastic complex and the inauguration of the “Wings of Tatev Ropeway.” This 5.7 km ropeway, completed in 11 months, traverses a deep gorge of the River Vorotan and hills covered with lush forests. The tramway is supported by three towers between its two terminals. One terminal is situated on a hill overlooking the village of Halidzor, while the other is near Tatev Monastery, on the road to Tatev village. Two cabins operate simultaneously, traveling in opposite directions. There are six cables in total (three for each cabin), each specifically designed for this project. In approximately 11 minutes, a tramway cabin transports 30 passengers at a time from the village of Halidzor to the magnificent Tatev complex.
