You may well be aware that Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital, is the most diverse and multi-religious city in the South Caucasus. It’s been home to followers of major world religions as well as ethnic religious communities for a long time.
In our journey, we’ll help you understand how Tiflis’s recent settlers adapted to modern-day circumstances, the neighborhoods and areas they chose to live in, and how they kept their age-old culture and religion alive.
As per many contemporary researchers, it’s the Yezidis who are recognised as the descendants of the Sumerians, the earliest civilization on earth. Through their troubled history, the Yezidis have endured 74 instances of genocide due to their religious beliefs. Remarkably, this community has managed to virtually safeguard their language, cultural heritage, and religion. Owing to Georgian people’s tolerance, Yezidis, along with other ethnic groups residing in Georgia, feel secure and most have become full-fledged citizens.
