At the border with Azerbaijan, the ancient monastery complex of Davit Gareja (or Gareji) stands as one of Georgia’s most remarkable historic sites. Its distinctiveness is enhanced by a lunar, semi-desert landscape that turns lush and blooms with flowers in early summer. Davit Gareja consists of approximately 15 monasteries scattered over a remote area (most of which are long abandoned), but visitors typically explore two – Lavra (restored since Soviet times and now inhabited by monks) and Udabno, located on the hill above, which boasts beautiful frescoes.

For an authentic glimpse of Georgian lifestyle, staying in Sighnaghi is highly recommended. Sighnaghi is a charming small town in eastern Georgia, nestled among green trees and stunning landscapes. The Bodbe (Qiziki) Eparchy Episcopacy center is located 2 km from Sighnaghi. The cathedral was constructed in the 4th century AD, on the tomb of St. Nino, who introduced Christianity to Georgia. The Bodbe monastery has been renovated multiple times by Georgian kings. From the late 15th century, the Bishop of Bodbe served as the commander of the Kakheti kingdom’s military and administrative entity. In 1991, monastic life was restored in Bodbe. One of the monastery’s most significant shrines is the miraculous icon of Mother Mary of Iveria. The monastery also houses large workshops for icon painting and needlework. Nuns are involved in expanding knowledge and preparing new religious service books based on manuscripts.

The tour includes a visit to the village of Badiauri to taste local bread baked according to traditional methods, and even bake some yourself! Badiauri is also the best place for wine-tasting activities in Kakheti.
