Ananuri Fortress is a sixteenth-century castle complex situated on the Aragvi River. The fortress is located beside the renowned Georgian Military Highway, overlooking the expansive Jinvali Lake. Its tall, turreted stone walls enclose two churches, a watchtower, and a reservoir. The main church’s facade is intricately carved with animal, floral, and Celtic-style patterns.
The next stop is Gudauri, an exceptional ski resort in Georgia. The resort is situated at an altitude of 7,217 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level. The first lower lift station is at 6,528 feet (1,990 meters) above sea level, and the top station, known as Summit Sadzele, is at 3,306 meters. The resort offers excellent skiing opportunities, with the ski season lasting from December through April.
From Gudauri, you’ll continue to Gergeti Trinity Church. Located at an altitude of 7,119 feet (2,170 meters), this twelfth or thirteenth-century monument was built on the southern slopes of Mkinvarcveri. Gergeti Trinity Church is a significant temple, renowned for its stunning scenery. The church is perched on a hill directly below the towering white massif of Mount Kazbek, which stands at 5,033 meters. Built six hundred years ago, its stones have withstood numerous blizzards, rain, and invasions, standing as a proud symbol of Georgian resilience. It is a perfect spot for photographers. After visiting Gergeti Church, you’ll arrive at Dariali Gorge, located on the border between Russia and Georgia. Historically significant as the only passage across the Caucasus, Dariali has been fortified since at least 150 BC. Tamari’s Fortress, also known as Dariali Castle, is situated on the right side of the River Tergi. On the left side of the River Tergi is a new monastery complex perched on a cliff about 70 meters high.
